Key Bridge Awarded Patent for Spectrum Sensing Capability
Patent Covers Important Environmental Sensing Requirements in the 3.5 GHz Band
McLean, VA – Key Bridge LLC today announced that CEO Jesse Caulfield has been awarded U.S. Patent No. 9,357,395 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The patent covers a system to protect non-informing transmitters from receiving interference—radio systems that must be empirically detected rather than learned from a database. Examples include mobile, sensitive, and secure applications such as U.S. Navy radar systems.
“This patent makes important claims required to operate an Environmental Sensing Capability in the 3.5 GHz band,” said Jesse Caulfield, Key Bridge CEO. “These will prove necessary to successfully protect any non-informing user from receiving interference. This invention protects United States Navy radar systems in a manner that satisfies their exacting operational security requirements. This is the first award in a series of recent filings. It is an exciting confirmation of our innovation and leadership in spectrum administration, sharing, and dynamic access.”
The patented technology supports geographically distributed spectrum sensors and partitioning strategies, enabling opportunistic users in certain regions based on detected incumbent presence or absence. Key Bridge has submitted proposals to operate both a Spectrum Access System (SAS) and Environmental Sensing Capability (ESC) in the 3550–3700 MHz band under the FCC’s Part 96 Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS).
“This patent sits at the heart of our ESC, which is neutral, transparent, and secure by design,” said Mr. Caulfield. “I am excited to continue our collaboration with industry partners and the U.S. Government as we test, certify, and ultimately bring this capability to market.”
