As the telecommunications landscape evolves rapidly, effective spectrum management has become essential for both commercial innovation and national security. At Key Bridge Wireless LLC, we are honored to have been selected to lead Project NSC-20-2093, the Dynamic Spectrum Sharing 5G Applications Prototype, in support of the Department of Defense's "5G – Next G" program.
This project addresses a critical challenge: enabling coexistence between airborne radar systems and 5G cellular networks in the 3.1-3.45 GHz band. Conducted at Hill Air Force Base and the Utah Test and Training Range, the initiative adopts a structured "crawl, walk, run" approach, encompassing three phases—from initial proof-of-concept through simulations and electromagnetic compatibility testing, to maturation via field demonstrations, and ultimately to production-level stability and integration.
In collaboration with Nokia Innovations, LLC, Key Bridge will develop a Spectrum Coexistence and Sharing (SCS) system leveraging open industry standards. This prototype will undergo iterative testing, including signal injection for realistic scenarios, to establish robust metrics for performance and effectiveness. Starting from Technology Readiness Levels 4-6, the system aims to deliver deployable solutions that enhance spectrum efficiency without compromising military operational integrity.
The DoD's investment in this effort, exceeding $7 million, reflects the strategic importance of dynamic spectrum sharing in maintaining U.S. leadership in 5G technologies. Successful outcomes will inform scalable deployments across DoD sites and potentially influence commercial applications in congested spectrum environments.
We appreciate the partnership with the National Spectrum Consortium and government stakeholders in this vital work. Key Bridge remains dedicated to delivering innovations that strengthen defense capabilities and support the broader telecommunications ecosystem.
