Concluding Our CBRS ESC Certification Testing with Deepwave Digital
Date: November 21, 2019
McLean, VA – Today I’m proud to share that we have successfully concluded certification testing of our Environmental Sensing Capability (ESC) system with the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences in support of the Citizens Broadband Radio Service.
Our team has worked tirelessly over several years to develop an AI-enabled ESC that integrates cutting-edge sensor technology from our partner Deepwave Digital. I truly believe this is the first large-scale commercial application of deep learning and artificial intelligence for spectrum monitoring and signal detection in telecommunications.
At the heart of this effort has always been incumbent protection. Our ESC is a geographically distributed network of sensors that must perform flawlessly—protecting federal radar users is the first and only priority. While we await the official report before releasing detailed results, I can confidently say that CBRS users who depend on our Environmental Sensing Capability can operate with complete assurance.
John Ferguson, CEO of Deepwave Digital, shares my enthusiasm: “We have leveraged the latest methods in AI and deep learning to create a sensor that correctly identified every radar signal variant in the certification test suite with extremely high accuracy… This allowed us to demonstrate that AI is a commercially viable solution to detect and discern current and future incumbent radar waveforms.”
We are now actively deploying the Key Bridge ESC network and expect to enter commercial service in early 2020.
I want to extend my deepest thanks to the FCC—particularly the teams at the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the Office of Engineering and Technology—for their visionary leadership in creating and guiding the CBRS framework. Their bold approach to three-tier sharing has opened valuable mid-band spectrum for innovation while maintaining rigorous protection standards. We’re also grateful to the Wireless Innovation Forum for their tireless work in building industry consensus and robust technical standards that make multi-vendor interoperability possible.
Thank you to our team, our partners at Deepwave Digital, and the entire CBRS community for your support as we reach this important milestone.
– Jesse Caulfield CEO, Key Bridge Wireless
