TV White Space (TVWS)

Frequency band

TV White Space refers to the unused broadcasting frequencies in the wireless spectrum. Television networks leave gaps between channels for buffering purposes, and this space in the wireless spectrum is similar to what is used for 4G and so it can be used to deliver widespread broadband Internet.

TV White Spaces (TVWS) are frequencies made available for unlicensed use at locations where the spectrum is not being used by licensed services, such as television broadcasting. This spectrum is located in the VHF and UHF bands.

White space rules generally provide for the following:

• High power fixed, medium power transportable and low power personal devices can operate on an unlicensed basis.
• Frequency allocations and channel assignments are coordinated by a Government authorized and certified geolocation database, such as the Key Bridge Spectrum Access System.
• Incumbent, licensed users are afforded interference protection by the Spectrum Access System. Examples include television broadcasts, wireless microphones, cable head ends and electronic news gathering.
